How to Obtain a Chinese Temporary Driving Permit?

Required Documents Checklist

• Original and photocopy of entry/exit ID: valid foreign passport with a valid Chinese visa or residence permit.
• Original and photocopy of overseas driver’s license: must be valid and non-probationary/non-temporary.
• Chinese translation of the overseas driver’s license: original translation copy issued by a qualified translation agency (stamped with official seal and attached with a copy of its business license) or a notary office.
• Photos: two recent one-inch color photos (bareheaded with a white background).
• Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Overseas Visitors: certificate of residence registration issued by your hotel in Chongqing.

Application Process

1. Document Submission: Applicants must bring the required documents above and submit them in person at the designated Vehicle Administrative Office window.
2. Safety Education: Complete no less than 30 minutes of road traffic safety laws and regulations study on-site (bilingual learning materials are available at selected windows).
3. Permit Issuance: Upon successful document verification and completion of the safety study, pay a nominal fee of approximately RMB 10 to receive your Temporary Motor Vehicle Driving Permit of the People’s Republic of China on-site.
